Classes

School-wide class management for Academic leads, Operations admins, and Owners.

Classes (formerly Student Groups) allow schools to organize learners into cohorts, assign dedicated teachers, and deliver structured curriculum programs.

For the everyday teacher workflow on creating classes, setting schedules, and delivering materials, see Classes in the School Guide. This page explains the school-wide capabilities available to administrators.

Teacher Ownership vs. School-Wide Administration

Locuto provides clear boundaries between teacher-level and school-wide class management:

  • Teachers: Own their personal roster. Teachers can create classes, manage student memberships, schedule sessions, and assign materials for the classes they teach. They do not see other teachers' classes.
  • Academic leads, Operations admins, and Owners: Hold school-wide authority across all classes in the organization:
    • View all school classes: Oversee all classes across all teachers from a single dashboard.
    • Assign classes to any teacher: When creating or editing a class, administrators can assign any active teacher in the organization.
    • Transfer classes between teachers (Handover): Reassign an active class to a new teacher when staff schedules change, transferring upcoming sessions while preserving completed history.
    • Manage school curriculum templates: Create reusable blueprints that teachers can instantiate into new class intakes. See Program Templates & Class Intakes.
    • Manage student seat capacity: Monitor student capacity across classes and courses.

Creating a School-Wide Class

The creation flow for administrators includes full staff assignment:

  1. Go to Classes in the sidebar.
  2. Click "Create Class".
  3. Enter the class name, avatar image or color swatch, and seat limit.
  4. In the Assigned Teacher dropdown, select the teacher who will lead this class.
  5. Configure schedule rules and lesson duration.
  6. Click "Save".

The assigned teacher will immediately see the class in their dashboard and schedule.

Reassigning a Class (Teacher Handover)

When a teacher takes leave or cohorts are reorganized, administrators can transfer a class to another teacher:

  1. Open the class from the Classes list.
  2. Click "Edit Class".
  3. Select the new teacher in the Assigned Teacher dropdown.
  4. Confirm the change.

What Transfers:

  • Upcoming live lesson sessions on the calendar
  • Future curriculum assignments and the class materials checklist
  • Authority to manage class students and start live rooms

What Is Preserved:

  • Completed lesson records and past attendance
  • Student grades and submitted homework
  • Historical authorship on past teaching observations

Monitoring Class Performance

Administrators can monitor learning across all classes:

  • Classes → [Class Name] → Statistics: Review attendance trends, lesson completion rates, and student engagement tiers.
  • Classes → [Class Name] → Materials: Check whether upcoming live lessons have prepared materials or if submissions are waiting for teacher review.
  • My School → Overview: High-level school health metrics aggregating class participation across the organization.

Q&A

Can an administrator move a class from one teacher to another?

Yes. Open the class settings, select a new teacher from the Assigned Teacher dropdown, and save. The class, upcoming lessons, and future materials transfer to the new teacher immediately.

Can a class use lessons from multiple courses?

Yes. Using the Program tab, classes can assemble lessons and homework from any course published in the school library.

What happens when a teacher leaves the school?

If a teacher's account is deactivated, their classes remain visible to school administrators on the Classes page. An administrator can reassign the classes to an active teacher to resume instruction.
