Key terms and definitions for the Locuto.PRO platform.
Roles
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Owner | A school's top administrator — full control of settings, branding, people, content, and finances. A school always keeps at least one Owner. (The Organization Admin section of these docs covers Owner tasks.) |
| Academic lead | School-wide academic authority — creates and assigns courses, sets standards, sees academic progress, enrolls students, manages groups, oversees teachers, and runs live lessons. Does not see finances, invite people, or publish to the marketplace. |
| Operations admin | Everything an Academic lead can do, plus finances (balances, top-ups, reports), inviting teachers and students, and marketplace publishing. Only school settings, branding, domains, and billing are reserved for the Owner. |
| Teacher | Manages their own courses, lessons, and students, and runs their own live lessons. |
| Student | A learner — takes lessons, submits homework, and follows their own progress. |
| CEFR Level | Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. A widely used proficiency scale: A1 (beginner) → C2 (mastery). |
See School Roles & Permissions for what each role can do and how to fine-tune access per person.
Course & Lesson Concepts
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| AI Content Claim | A formal quality claim submitted within 90 days of an AI generation to request a refund of AI credits for corrupted, truncated, or defective generation output. |
| Blueprint | A reusable lesson structure scaffold without student-facing text or exercise prose. Applying a Blueprint replaces the lesson’s current structure and content. See Lesson Builder & Lesson Blocks. |
| Booking request | A student's request to schedule the first live session for a released class lesson that has no time yet. The fulfillment teacher approves and sets the final slot. Distinct from reschedule, which moves an already scheduled session. |
| Class | A named cohort of students learning together (formerly called Student Group). Classes can be taught live or asynchronously and can draw materials from multiple courses via a Class Program. |
| Class Checklist | The operational list of curriculum items under a class’s Materials tab, tracking assigned, completed, and upcoming work across the class roster. |
| Class Program | A structured learning sequence assembled for a specific class cohort, featuring customizable automated release rules (e.g., homework opens after class, preparation opens 24 hours before class). |
| Content Template | A course lesson that carries reusable lesson content for student copies. It is different from a structure-only Blueprint. |
| Course | A collection of lessons organized around a language learning curriculum. Has a title, target language, CEFR level, and category. |
| Course Lesson | A lesson within a course — the content template from which student copies are created. |
| Demo Lesson | A publicly accessible sample lesson viewable without logging in. Showcases the platform's editor and exercise features, including interactive speaking demos when the lesson contains them. Demo recordings are test attempts and do not affect real course progress. Available at /demo/lessons. |
| Enrollment | A student's registration in a course. Links a student to a course and tracks their overall progress. |
| Google Calendar Sync | Two-way calendar synchronization that exports Locuto lessons to a teacher's personal Google Calendar and blocks availability in Locuto during Google busy times. |
| Group Individual Work | When homework or exercises are assigned to a class, each student receives their own separate lesson copy and live session. The calendar aggregates these into a single item showing all participants with per-student status tracking. Unlike group class sessions (where everyone shares one session), group homework and exercises are completed independently. |
| Instant Lesson | A temporary lesson created on-the-fly during a live session. Instant lessons do not appear in the regular course lesson list and are tied to a specific session. |
| Invite Code | A code generated by teachers that students enter to join a course directly. |
| Join Request | A student's request to be taken on by a teacher, sent from the teacher's profile. Tracked as pending, accepted, rejected, or expired on the student's Teachers page. See Finding a Teacher. |
| Late Presence Resolution | The administrative flow allowing teachers to resolve post-session late student arrivals without triggering automated financial debits or balance deductions. |
| Lesson Copy | An individual student's copy of a course lesson, tracking their personal progress. |
| Lesson Plan | The ordered structure of a lesson: a flat list of Steps with plan-level settings such as topic, level, and duration. |
| Lesson Tools Panel | The consolidated popup panel on the live classroom dock grouping drawing tools, editor controls, sound settings, and account AI balance. |
| Lesson Type | Classification of lessons: Class lesson (synchronous live session), Exercise (practice activities), Homework (assignments), or Self-study (personal study material). |
| Live Rail | The sticky left navigation and control dock in Structure mode, displaying duration budgeting, the Step Palette, and AI generation preflight cost estimates. |
| Live Session | A real-time interactive class conducted between a teacher and students with video, audio, and screen sharing. |
| Marketplace enrollment | A course enrollment created after a student purchases a Marketplace course listing. The student studies in the seller organization without an invite code. |
| Observed Item | A lesson in an active class program that has been opened or started by at least one student, locking its core scheduling and opening rules against disruptive changes. |
| Pending Billing | A safe holding status for student invitations when an organization has reached its seat limit or requires payment confirmation before activation. |
| Presentation Deck | A slide-by-slide lesson presentation view created from level-1 headings (# ) or /pagebreak divides, featuring ToC slide rail controls, docked pagers, and active-slide Ask AI insertion. |
| Program Template | A reusable, school-wide curriculum blueprint that can be instantiated into multiple class intakes without copying past student records or attendance. |
| Program Unit | A visual chapter heading in a Class Program that groups contiguous lessons with a title, description, and custom cover image. |
| Public Course | A course marked as public by an organization admin. Visible to teachers from other organizations in read-only mode and available for copying into their own school. |
| Satellite Homework | Homework or preparation material attached directly to a live class lesson on the student learning trail. |
| Self-study | Personal material a student buys from Marketplace or creates in My Library. |
| Stage | A label and derived run grouping related Steps. A Stage is not a nested lesson container. |
| Starter | A complete, fully populated multi-lesson course template in the course library ready to be copied or used as a foundation. Distinct from a structure-only Blueprint. |
| Step | The atomic unit of lesson structure (<section>). A teacher can configure, generate, reorder, or replace each Step independently using the Step Palette (Cmd+K / Ctrl+K). |
| Structure mode | The editor view that shows the plan panel, Step cards, and plan settings. It is the authoring view for shaping a Lesson Plan. |
| Studies Hub | The unified student learning center (/platform/studies), containing a prioritized To Do queue, Done (Handed-in) archive, and active Courses view. |
| Teaching Observations | Confidential, staff-only notes written by teachers during live lessons or in the student dossier to record learning progress, challenge areas, and personal context. |
| Time pass | A Marketplace billing mode for course listings: the student buys timed access to the full course (including live class lessons) for a set validity period. |
| Working Copy | The unpublished draft of a lesson that is already published. Edits to a published lesson go into its working copy, and students keep receiving the last published version until the teacher publishes the draft. An amber asterisk after a lesson's title marks a lesson that has one. See Working Copies. |
Lesson Statuses

Homework & Assessment
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Homework Verification | Teacher review and confirmation of submitted homework, with written feedback. |
| AI Oversight | The controls that decide when a person must check an AI-assisted assessment result before it counts toward a formal outcome, and that let a student ask for such a check. See AI Oversight and Human Review. |
| Formal Assessment | AI-assisted assessment of school work that can lead to a formal outcome such as a certificate — speaking and writing in an exam lesson of a school course, and CEFR reports on school lessons. Self-study and personal practice are not formal, and are never routed for review. |
| Exam Task | An exam-oriented task generated for a school lesson. Exam Tasks use the school’s pooled capacity and the applicable per-task licence rules. |
| Freeform Answer | An open-ended answer task that can be configured for optional AI checking or teacher grading. |
| CEFR Calibration | Per-task writing or speaking grading calibrated from the course CEFR level. This is different from a holistic CEFR assessment of a student’s overall level. |
| Holistic CEFR Assessment | A report estimating a student’s overall CEFR level from a submission, rather than scoring one task. |
| Assessment Review | The teacher's check of a flagged AI-assisted result. The reviewer can confirm it, correct it (setting the right level or score, with an explanation for the student), or withdraw it so it cannot be used. |
| Review Request | A student's request for a person to check an AI-assisted result. Available once per result, on results that were accepted automatically or already reviewed. |

Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|

| Spaced Repetition | Learning technique that increases intervals between reviews as a word is mastered. |
AI Credit, Billing & Accounting
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| AI Credit | Prepaid platform value used for eligible AI and platform services. Current rates are listed on Pricing. |

| AI Credit Balance | Current prepaid platform value available for AI and platform services. |
| School AI Credits | AI Credits held by a school for eligible organization usage. Exam Task capacity is pooled across the organization rather than assigned to one exam. |
| Personal Balance | A student's own balance used for eligible student-paid AI operations, including self-study usage. |
| Operation Allowance | A plan allowance for a specific operation type. Allowances are separate from a personal balance and do not form one generic assessment-credit pool. |
| Accounting | The school’s real-money and student-accounting surface for balances, transactions, and related financial records. It is separate from AI Credits. |
| Stripe Integration | The connection between an organization and Stripe to process payments and handle marketplace payouts. |
| Burn Projection | Forecast of when AI credit will run out based on current spending rate. |
| Bonus Code | A redeemable code that grants AI credit. Entered on the Billing page, usable once per person, and credited to whichever balance matches the account that redeems it — personal for a student, the school pool for a school manager. |
| Referral Code | A reusable code school staff share with people they invite. The person who signs up gets a welcome credit on their personal balance; the referrer's reward goes to the school's shared pool after the invited person's first purchase. |
| Per-Member Budget | A weekly or monthly AI credit limit set for one member of a school. The member sees their usage as they approach it, and AI credit charges are refused once it is reached, until the next period. |
| Automatic Debit | An AI credit charge nobody clicked buy for — lesson recording and its storage, certificate issuance, and bundled marketplace assessment attempts. Schools can review these in a dedicated ledger. See Accounting & Billing. |
| Merchant of Record | The party legally selling an item and responsible for its refunds. For marketplace sales this is the selling school, not Locuto — Locuto processes the payment. Buyers are told this before they pay. |
Editor & Content Creation
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Lex Editor | Rich content editor supporting 60+ content types, interactive exercises, media, and real-time collaboration. |
| AI Lesson Generation | Automated content creation that writes lesson content Step by Step. Teachers review generated content before publishing or assigning it. |
| Lesson Analysis | AI analysis of a student's completed lesson. Examines answers across all exercises and produces a report with performance breakdown, error patterns, strengths, weaknesses, and follow-up recommendations. Uses AI credit when not covered by a plan or allowance. |
| Edit Permission Toggle | A teacher control available during individual live sessions that grants or revokes a student's ability to edit the shared lesson document in real time. Shown as a green pencil (can edit) or red pencil-off (view-only) icon on the student's avatar. |
| Collaboration | Real-time multi-user editing with live cursors, comments, and presence indicators. |
| Annotations | Comments and suggestions added to lesson content for collaborative review. |
| Game Widget | Interactive exercise element placed inside lessons (e.g., matching, fill-in-the-blank, sentence builder). |
| Lesson Blocks | Reusable content primitives such as text, media, and interactive widgets. They are lesson content, not containers for the Lesson Plan’s Steps. |
| Ask AI | In-editor AI assistant that helps teachers generate, rewrite, or improve content directly within a lesson. |
| PDF Block | A PDF placed inside a lesson, showing only the pages the teacher selected. Supports shared PDF notes and follows the teacher during presentation. See PDF Documents. |

| Organization Membership | A user's role inside one school: Student, Teacher, Operations admin, Academic lead, or Owner. One Locuto account can hold memberships in multiple schools at once. |
| Primary Domain | The public Locuto.PRO domain (locuto.pro). It hosts the global Marketplace, Find a Teacher, and cross-school views for users who belong to more than one school. |
| Branded Domain | A school's own web address — either a Locuto subdomain (e.g., myschool.locuto.pro) or a custom domain (e.g., lessons.myschool.edu). The school can choose whether its branded home opens to sign-in, its course storefront, or its CMS; users see the school’s scoped experience there. |
| White Label | Paid add-on that lets a school run Locuto.PRO on its own branded domain with custom logo, colors, slogan, and support email. See White Label. |
| Help Link | The address a school points its sidebar Help entry at on its own branded domain, so users reach the school's support material instead of the Locuto documentation. Falls back to the school's support email, and is hidden entirely if neither is set. |
